Tour: Jamaica - The One Love

[Back to Eco Tours]

It all starts with a bird, a humming bird. It is called the Doctor Bird. It's unique in that it is only found in Jamaica. So unique, that it is the national bird of Jamaica. Believed to possess magical power, the Doctor bird's plumage of greens, blues and purples epitomize the vivid luminescence of the land. An island that will be yours when you come. Just as unique. Just as colorful. Your unique journey begins at the hotel-on-the-hilltop, the Hotel Mockingbird Hill. Make like a bird to the hotel where a couple's every whim is on its mind. The secluded nature of the area is the attraction. The hotel is just ten minutes away from Port Antonio's coast. An area known for its stunning, unspoiled vistas and verdant landscape. Ease into the everyday life of the local village while taking part in all the activities available. A destination designed for two, Hotel Mockingbird Hill gives couples a chance to enjoy all of Jamaica's ethereal pleasures on over six beautifully landscaped acres. The hotel's eco-friendly philosophy compliments the natural surroundings. Absorb the insights and historical information on Jamaican arts and culture shared by Mockingbird Hill's staff. Port Antonio's lush landscapes yield fruits and other edible vegetation that are incorporated into the local cuisine. Savor Jamaica's one love life.

DAY 1 | IN FLIGHT TO MOCKINGBIRD
When you arrive, the burst of hot air that greets you will be just the first warm welcome. Check-in at Hotel Mockingbird Hill. Soak in your surroundings and settle in. There is no better place to go to than the beach. Drop your bags and head to the sandy shores.

DAY 2 | PELU AND BLUE
In the morning, you will have breakfast at the hotel. The in-house restaurant serves up all kinds of culinary goodness. Next, a boat docked in the harbor is ready to take you on a tour of the scenic coastline passing the famous islands of Pelu and Blue. Pelu Island has a history, indeed. The Aga Khan gave his bride the island as a wedding gift. The coastal cruise takes about an hour. When you return, you will be in the water and of the water. You don't want to dip but plunge in the deep, blue sea. A sea made for splashing. Grab your snorkel gear and float like a butterfly on the sea's surface. The tiniest of fish and coral inhabit the area closest to the shoreline. Further out, you will notice the stark contrast in ocean fauna. The day dies down into gentler winds and calmer seas. Close your first full day with diner and a walk on the beach at night. [B,D]

DAY 3 | THE DAY OF R'S
Rafting on the Rio Grande….Grab your partner for some bamboo rafting down the Rio Grande. You will want to make the most of every bite of breakfast because you'll need the energy although the boat will have a captain. Bamboo rafting originated on the Rio Grande in Portland. Traditionally, the farmers used the bamboo rafts to transport the bananas from their farms inland to Port Antonio. The farmer's ingenious way of transporting their goods has translated into a river pastime. As your captain steers downstream, you will pass signs of rural village life. People do reside here and everyday life continues no matter who is traveling on the river. Your rafting ride continues on to Lover's Point. When you get there, make a wish, kiss the one you love and your wish will come true! If your wish does not come true, then you grabbed the wrong person. Return to the hotel and if you have not already, rest your rafting, weary soul in a hammock until dinnertime. [B,D]

DAY 4 | IN TANDEM: YOUR DAY
Wake up to the sunshine on your last full day on the hilltop. Energize your day with breakfast at the hotel and make your quick change for the activities of the day. You might need a bathing suit or riding britches or both. This is the time to fit in all the stuff you wanted to do but were to busy doing other fun things. At the beach, you can bury yourself in the sand. Create a sand castle and sunbathe. When in the water, scuba dive, swim and snorkel. Explore the outlying areas around the hotel. Take guided hiking excursions. Tour plantations. Getting to know local history and heritage as seen through the plantations is vital to understanding of where the country is now. Bicycle through the villages making stops along the way. A world outside the confines of the hotel awaits your participation. If your feet will not carry you then allow hooves to. Horseback ride along the shore, kicking up a sandy storm as you ride into the sun. In between all the out-and-about fun, sometimes it's hard to remember to have lunch. You can make your way back to the hotel or when out in the local villages, grab a bite. When your day is done, it's a good idea to get a full-body massage. Relax those tired muscles before dinner. [B,D]

DAY 5 | A WARM GOODBYE
It's breakfast in the morning. Let the cooler winds of the morning surround you on this day. Sunshine, sea, sand and the land. These all are in you, a part of you. You felt it and experienced it. Hotel Mockingbird Hill and Port Antonio will be waiting for you when you return. [B]
